Dewalt 716 Miter Saw Review

The Dewalt 716 is one of the range of miter chop saws manufactured by Dewalt. It is very confusing to see all the model numbers in a catalogue. It is hard to work out exactly what each model is for and how it differs from the other models.

Dewalt Saw Blade

An Overview of Miter Chop Saws Types

Dewalt Saw Blade

The is a progression in the range that starts with your basic Dewalt chop saw. This model is the cheapest one and just does straight cuts in wood. To use it with aluminium or wood laminates you need to have the specific Dewalt saw blade for that use. There is no opportunity to make angled cuts or cuts to large pieces of wood. The blade and motor unit is fixed in place.

The next model is where your motor and blade unit is fixed but you can angle the cut. The range is just over 90 degrees in adjustment. This is where the Dewalt 716 sits in the range. You can make accurate 45 degree cuts in either orientation. There is also a staged indent system for certain common angles such as 30 degrees. So you can in a few seconds select one of these set angles to cut.

The next type is where the angle is fixed but the motor and blade slides forward. This enables you to cut wide wood pieces. Very few people use this type because you might as well go for the top of the range. The top of the range model is the Dewalt 718 which is a compound sliding miter saw. This cuts at angles through 2 planes and is a terrific piece of kit if you need the features it provides.

How To Use The Dewalt 716 Chop Saw

The main use for this particular saw is to cut down long pieces of wood into correct lengths. You maximum size for cutting will be around 150mm by 50mm. (6" X 2") Pieces bigger than this are not easy to cut. If you are working on a real wood floor then you can cut the planks easily and accurately with this. This is probably the job that the DW716b is used for. It is portable enough to carry to your working site but accurate enough to do a great cut. The cut is very clean. The blades will last for years if you use the right blade for each job. You shouldn't use a wood blade to cut laminate flooring. You can get a dedicated blade for cutting laminated wood.

The second use is for cutting very accurate 45 degree cuts. You can dial up any angle but in practice it is the 45 degree setting that you will use. I have had 3 of these over the last 22 years and they work very hard. The Dewalt range is designed for heavy use and the Dewalt 716 is part of that standard. Cheaper models such as the evolution range will do a job but will make the job longer. They are not so easy to use.

Types Of Scroll Saw Blades: Part 1

When it comes to choosing which type of scroll saw blade to install on your scroll saw, there are a variety of choices. Here, I will outline the major types of scroll saw blades and in which situation to use each one.

Dewalt Saw Blade

Scroll saw blades come in two major types: pin end and plain end. The plain-end is a type of blade that is completely flat and is pinched in place between the jaws of small clamps on the scroll saw. The pin-end has a tiny cross pin in each end. The main difference between the two types of blades is the cross pin. The plain end blades are five inches long, will fit almost all types of scroll saws and are more widely available.

Dewalt Saw Blade

There are several types of plain end blades:

1. Standard Tooth

On standard tooth blades, the teeth have identical sizes and are evenly spread out. Wood blades and metals blades are the two major types. Larger teeth and larger spaces between the teeth are found on wood blades. The design is intended to clear sawdust as one makes cuts. On the contrary, metal blades have much smaller teeth and fewer spaces between teeth. Some can find these to be a bit noisy.

2. Skip-tooth

Skip-tooth blades and standard tooth blades are quite similar. The one thing that distinguishes the two is that with the skip-tooth every other tooth is missing. The gullet, the space between the teeth, is wider and this also helps to keep the blade cool. Most prefer these types of blades. These types of blades are also recommended for newbie scroller sawers.

3. Double-tooth

The double-tooth blade is similar to the skip-tooth blade but the double-tooth has a bigger gullet between two teeth sets. The double-tooth types can produce a very smooth cut; however they can cut a bit slower.

4. Reverse Skip-tooth

The reverse skip-tooth blade is identical to the skip-tooth blade; however the teeth that are found at end of the bottom row point up. When working with plywood and for preventing tear-out splintering at the bottom of the cut, the reverse-skip tooth blade will work very well.

One must remember that when working with a reverse skip-tooth blade one must set the blade in a specific manner. When the saw arm is in its highest position, the blade should be set in the clamps so there are only two to three teeth that are protruding above the table top. If you are not able to do this, you might have to take a little bit off from the bottom of the blade.

Lightweight Reclining Stroller

Types of Scroll Saw Blades: Part 2

In my previous article, Types of Scroll Saws Blades Part 1, I discussed the two major types of scroll saw blades and I discussed the most commonly used types of plain-ends. In this article, I will continue to discuss the types of plain-end scroll saw blades that are available to you as a scroll sewer.

Dewalt Saw Blade

1. Precision-ground

Dewalt Saw Blade

These are in actual fact skip-tooth blades. However, this type has small teeth that have been ground instead of filed. Due to this, the blades are much sharper and produce a straight-line cut and have a very smooth surface finish. Most would not recommend this type to beginner scrollers. This is due to the fact that these types can be very unforgiving, that is to say that many mistakes can be made with these sort of blades due to their aggressiveness.

2. Spiral

Spiral blades have teeth that go all the way around the blade. These are made by twisting a group of blades together. With this, one is able to cut in all directions without the need to turn the wood. Most would not recommend these, unless for very specific applications, for several reasons. Although there are a few uses for them, the blade leaves a very rough and wide surface finish, one cannot make tight or sharp corners and they also tend to stretch with use.

3. Crown-tooth

Crown-tooth blades are a relatively new type of design in scroll saw blades. The teeth have a shape of a crown with a space between each crown. There is no wrong way to put these blades in. They can go in either way, they is no upside down. This makes them quite versatile. Some find that crown-tooth blades cut a bit slower than regular blades. However, this makes them great for cutting materials such as plastic or Plexiglass. Another thing one can do with crown-tooth blades is, when the blade loses its sharpness, to reverse insert the blade. This will produce a blade that is sharp again.

4. Other types

Although the blades listed in this article and in Part 1 will be more than enough to tackle the majority of projects that you come across, they are a few types of specialty blades available. There are blades to cut metal, plastic and some that even cut blades. Most companies provide special blades for these sort of applications. You must ensure that you check with the manufacturer of the blade that the blade is suited for the specialty application that you intend to use it for. There are special blades designed to cut metal, plastic and even glass. Check them out as you advance in your scrolling. You may want to use them for special applications. Almost all saw companies provide special blades.

Table Saw Reviews - Is The Dewalt DW745 The Best Table Saw In Its Class?

Table Saws are one of the most important items in the site carpenter's arsenal. Choosing the right compact table saw to use on-site needs careful consideration. This review will look at the areas you need to consider when buying, and ask the question - Is the Dewalt Dw745 table saw the best compact saw in its class.

Dewalt Saw Blade

There are a number of important areas to consider when making a purchase of an power tool, and table saws are no exception. A relative asked me to give my honest opinion on what he should buy, and I soon found myself up to my neck in reviews and customer feedback. But I did make progress.

Dewalt Saw Blade

Here are some of the essential areas you should look at before you buy.

What type of materials are you going to be cutting - hardwood, treated lumbar, wood from period properties? Power and capacity of the saw Will you use it all the time or just occasionally Does it need to be portable or will a heavier fixed saw suffice Is cost more important to you than performance? Consider fence quality, the quality of the tabletop, tilt, miter ability and blade size.

If price is the all important factor, then you are likely to end up pretty disappointed with your purchase. The cheapy saws are fine for occasional work, but they are generally inaccurate and not up to the hard work a tradesman or serious hobbyist is likely to put them through.

The Dewalt DW745 table saw has some excellent specifications and appears to be one of the best for the money.

Regarding materials, seasoned hardwoods can be a real test for any saw. You need to have a unit with a powerful motor, a good blade speed, and the right type of blade for the job. This dewalt saw offers a 15 amp motor, and a no-load speed of 3850 rpm. This makes it more than capable of cutting a wide range of timbers with ease.

The Dewalt DW745 also gets rave reviews from a wide range of customers, including woodwork professionals who love it's compact yet powerful cutting action. It seems to have stood the test of time and proved itself time and time again in commercial scenarios.

It weighs in at a manageable 45 pounds and comes with a quality 10" 24 tooth blade, a miter gauge, push stick, and a THREE year warranty. Dewalt also offer a 90 day money back guarantee for added piece of mind.

Reviews from customer all over the web give this remarkable little saw between 4.5 and 5 stars with very few complaints. One customer review mentioned that he could not fit a dado blade to the saw, but I have honestly struggled to find any real negatives.

With all this in mind, it seems like the answer to the question, "Is the Dewalt DW745 table saw the best in it's class?" is a resounding, YES.

The Dewalt Scroll Saw and the Weekend Hobbiest

The possibilities of making wood crafts and decorations
are unlimited, when you have the right tools, and patterns.
Dewalt tools are my preference, for the simple fact that they
are dependable and they have a large variety for just about
every job imaginable.

Dewalt Saw Blade

When it comes to making crafts and decorations the Dewalt
tool I am really impressed with is the scroll saw. This tool allows
you to cut some really detailed designs. You will need to have
a drill on hand so you can make a starter hole for inside cuts.
With this saw you can make wall hangings, clocks, decorations
to set on you mantel or entertainment center ect... Lets go over
a couple of these in more detail.

Dewalt Saw Blade

If your wanting to make a wall hanging with your dewalt scroll
saw. First you need to decide on the pattern. This can be
something you drew up yourself or something you purchased.
Second, you need to decide what type wood you want pine, oak,
cherry, walnut, etc... to get the look you prefer. Third, place you
pattern on the surface and trace the design. After you get it
transferred, take your dewalt drill and with a small bit drill holes
in the center designs to be cut out. Now your ready for your
dewalt scroll saw. Loosen the blade adjustment and place the
blade through one of the pre-drilled pilot holes and reattach it to
the saw and set the blade tension. Make your cut. Repeat this
step until all your designs are finished. Sand it down add a little
varnish and your done. You can also glue some colored felt on
the back to really bring out the artwork.

If you want to make a clock with your dewalt scroll saw. First
you need to get a battery operated clock assembly. Your local
craft store should be able to help you with this. Transfer your
design just like with the wall hanging. But, before you drill the
pilot holes you need to add in the place for your clock fixture.
Make sure you place it in your design where it will have enough
wood to hold it solid. Make your cuts, do the finish work, add the
clock assembly and you have just made yourself a hand crafted
clock.

For making a mantle it is basically the same as the wall hanging,
just leave a flat spot on the bottom of your design. Cut out a platform
and take your dewalt router and put a contoured edge around the
top and glue your designed piece in the center. And you have a
mantle piece.

I suggest sticking with single piece designs until you get the feel
of your dewalt scroll saw. Then you can move on to multiple piece
designs that need to be glued together. But with a little practice, the
possibilities of things you can make with this dewalt tool is unlimited.

The Newest Makita Miter Saws - Better Than DeWalt?

Visit any construction job site and you're likely to see at least one miter saw being used at any given moment. And most likely, it's going to be yellow in color. DeWalt miter saws are, far and away, the most popular among contractors. But the question is, why? Are they the only ones that do the job well? Or are they better than all the rest?

Dewalt Saw Blade

The answer to those last two questions is a resounding "NO". But it's unlikely that a guy who spent 0-700 on a miter saw is going to tell someone else it's not the best. So the other guy goes out and buys one, too.

Dewalt Saw Blade

To demonstrate that there might be better alternatives, let's take a look at the latest generation of Makita slide compound miter saws, the 12 inch LS1216L and it's "little brother" the 10 inch LS1016L:

Both models come with an independent laser guide that can be turned on to check your alignment before you hit the trigger (laser is sold separately for the DeWalt) With Makita's new, unique gear drive design the motor casings are raised up above the usual position, giving you more clearance The LS1216L can handle crown molding up to 8" nested vertically (compared to 6-5/8" on the 12" DeWalt DW718) and baseboard up to 6-1/2", also vertical The LS1016L can handle crown molding up to 6-5/8" and baseboard up to 4-3/4" vertically Both Makita models have a powerful 15 amp motor, electronically controlled so the speed doesn't vary, even when working hard The LS1216L can cross cut up to 15" and the LS1016 up to 12" at 90 degrees Both the 10" and 12" models have innovative adjustable, split fences. The bottom and top portions slide independently to give more support, control and precision to your miter and bevel cuts The slide mechanism on both models has four round rails, riding on ball bearings, to give you smooth yet rigid movement and more accurate cuts (DeWalt uses only two rails) Each one has nine positive stops for miter cuts and seven for bevel cuts The price of the LS1216L is about the same as the DeWalt DW718 but it has more features Makita LS1016L and LS1216L dual bevel slide compound miter saws are built with typical Makita quality, durability and ease of use. One customer, writing a review of a Makita miter saw said: "Best saw I've ever used." Another said after using one of their miter saws, he changed all his power tools to Makita. And that's probably not a bad idea.

Dewalt 718 Miter Chop Saw Review

The Dewalt 718 is one of the superb range of miter saws that the company manufactures. I have used the dewalt 718 and its forerunners for about 20 years and find it ideal for all sorts of cutting jobs in my workshop. The first one I bought in 1989 was used daily for 10 years in a busy commercial setting making around 50 - 100 cuts per day. It was stolen from my workshop which meant that work had to stop while we got a replacement. One week later the new one arrived with a number of improvements over the old one.

Dewalt Saw Blade

Constant Product Improvements On Dewalt Miter Saws

Dewalt Saw Blade

The improvements included the fantastic guarding system that covers the blade. As you make a cut the guard reveals just enough of the blade to make the cut without exposing the operator to the saw blade. Another development was the addition of quick clamps to hold your work in place while you make the cut.

We do not always use these clamps but they are very solid. Just can clamp and unclamp your work in about 5 seconds using the ratchet system inherent in the 2 clamps. As many of the profiles we cut are non square we use jigs with the clamps to hold the work securely.

Eventually my second Dewalt 718 stopped working. We had run it into the ground over 11 years and the motor bearings were beginning to wear out. Dewalt did offer to change the motor but I decided to buy a brand new one.

New Features On The Latest Dewalt 718 Miter Saw

We have now had the latest version of the DW718 for about 6 months. Again there is the guarding system which has been further improved. The clamp system is the same. The best new feature is the laser cutting guide. It shines directly onto your work and the beam is the exact width of the blade. So you can see both sides of the cut.

This is critical when you are working to very tight tolerances. If A piece of Aluminium has to be 1789mm then the laser beam allows me to hit that measurement exactly.

The other main improvement is the start up speed of the blade. It quickly gets to full speed when you press the on switch. About half the time of the previous model. There is also a brake on the blade which means that it stops turning very quickly. You no longer feel you are waiting for the blade to stop. It just starts and stops very fast.

Most of my work is with aluminium and wood. These need completely different Dewalt saw blades. You cannot use a wood saw blade on aluminium without causing damage to the blade. You will also find the work catches in the blade which is quite dangerous. An aluminium saw blade will cut wood but the teeth will go blunt much quicker. This is particularly true for cutting laminates and chipboard.

Sliding Compound Mitre Saw Blade Tips

If you are buying a sliding compound mitre saw for the first time, you might like to read these useful tips about saw blades. They will make your life easier and keep you safe.

Dewalt Saw Blade

To start off, most DIY enthusiasts use the all-purpose blade that comes with the saw. If it's a reputable make, you will be able to carry out a wide variety of jobs around the home with this blade, and for many people, the original blade is the only one they will ever need.

Dewalt Saw Blade

However, if you decide later on that you want to do more specialised work, such as precision cabinet making, it will pay you to go for more specialist blade to match the task, and incidentally, this applies to all prices of sliding mitre saw and to any make, from Makita to Bosch, from Dewalt to Hitachi. It really does pay to have the correct blade for the job, especially for finer work where you will be bringing together several wooden components.

If sliding compound mitre saws are new to you, you need to know that their blades have a less "aggressive" cut than other power saws, which means that the teeth of the blade need to be less "hooked". The "hook" angle is the thing to look out for. You need between zero and minus five degrees for a sliding compound mitre saw, otherwise the wood will be chewed up and things could get dangerous.

Whether you stick to the original blade that came with the saw, or build up a little collection of blades, here are some great tips (no pun intended) to keep them in top condition:

* Clean your blades so that resin from the wood does not build up as this will impede the movement of the blade through your work. Good cleaners are available from hardware shops specifically for this purpose. Be aware that you should not use caustic cleaners like oven cleaner, as this can loosen the carbide tips of the teeth. For a more natural cleaner, there's a product called "Simple Green", or you can even use baking soda and water.
* If it's getting hard to feed wood through your sliding mitre saw, the saw's blade may be in need of sharpening (assuming that everything else is adjusted correctly). Don't delay the sharpening and go to a professional.
* Keep your blades in a dry place and use a water repelling oil like WD-40 to keep rust at bay. It's a good idea to cut some scrap wood to start with if you have previously coated the blade for storage - you don't want to oil up a nice expensive piece of hardwood!
* Store blades flat, with card or something similar in between if you are stacking them, or you could chip the hard but brittle carbide tips.

Please follow these tips and you will get the best, and the safest, performance from your sliding compound mitre saw.
